Though the sex to which I belong is considered weak you will nevertheless find me a rock that bends to no wind -- Elizabeth I
Hello everybody,
While I am quietly sitting in the library working on my paper I thought I'd just write a little blog for my readers.
Reading week is over, one exam done and one paper handed in, and now we wait. Because this course was only have the semester long I am done with it. Hopefully forever but let's not jump to conclusions and just wait for the grades. It went sorta alright though, fucked up a question by switching 2 terms in my head, but overall average performance in this test. After that I had a nice relaxing weekend and my monday free as well, becase this course is over. Looking forward to next weekend with easter and all. I have a brunch on Sunday and a football match to watch on Monday, if the weather permits it. Right now there is this sort of storm/hurricane moving over the Netherlands, blowing over trucks and trees all over the country but I will not bend! Thanks Elizabeth I.
The essay I am working on is about English dominating the academic publishing world and it made me realise English is kinda dominating my world too. Just take this blog for example, my mother tongue is Dutch and most people who read this speak Dutch and still I write it in English. I speak English almost all day everyday with my friends in school and I find it hard to switch back to Dutch with them. My boyfriend gets to hear a lot of my English and so do my brother and his girlfriend. Eventhough I have like 3 other languages to choose from when at my bros house. My mom sometimes complains she can't always understand her own children, Sorry mom, love you!
I read in English, watch tv in English, and I go to school in English. Last year I had my minor in Dutch and I had to write a research paper in Dutch and could hardly figure out how to do it. I had my mom check it 10000 times for spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. And this year I have 2 courses in Dutch and it really took some getting used to. Especially after 5 months in England.
Don't worry I won't change my blog into Dutch, except maybe if all the readers that still read my blog are Dutch, then just let me know.
Sometimes English is just easier, and sometimes I feel like it sounds prettier.
Dutch however is a nice language and I would not want to lose any part of it for the world, it is my language and eventhough i study English I can't imagine life without Dutch.
Have a good week everyone!
If you are in the Netherlands hold on, try not to blow away!
Bye
